One of my friends once jokingly said to me, “You’re going to need a few lifetimes to see and experience everything on your Bucket List” — and I couldn’t agree more. I’ve had this fear that there are too many places to visit and not nearly enough time to explore each destination for a while now; and while I’ve made quite the dent in my Bucket List, I still have a long ways to go.
I am always on the prowl to find new destinations to add to my Bucket List and my 101 goals in 1001 days list, and last January I decided to create a personal goal for 2016, where I would challenge myself to a new adventure each month. I promised myself that each month I would do something new, try something new, or go somewhere new for a total of 12 new adventures for the entire year. So how did I do?
January: I crossed off one of my 101 goals by traveling with my sweet family to Hawaii. We are weeks away from another adventure to our favorite islands and I find myself wishing that my family was coming with us again this year. There’s always next year… Dad, if you’re reading, let’s plan another trip 😉
February: I finally had the opportunity to explore the incredible Red Rock Wonderland that is Arches National Park. This trip began with a text to my brother asking if he wanted to go skydiving, and even though the season wasn’t quite open at the end of February, we still traveled to Moab to hike and explore.
March: (Bucket List Item) — I didn’t realize what an incredible experience it would be to hike Angel’s Landing in Zions National Park, and nine months later I still get butterflies in my stomach thinking about this journey. I was able to spend four fantastic days with my brother and his cute little family and am so thankful that he invited me to tag-a-long (Cody couldn’t get off work, so hopefully he’ll be able to come with us the next time around). 🙂
April: This month was a little more quiet. We toured a local brewery and sampled the delicious beer. Just another great weekend in the City of Salt.
May: (Bucket List Item) — I learned how to fly an airplane! It was a huge adrenaline rush
and only slightly crazy. And while I prefer jumping out of small airplanes as opposed to flying them, this adventure was a unique experience that I won’t soon forget.
June: (Bucket List Item) — I was lucky enough to spend my 30th birthday AND our five year wedding anniversary in a dreamy overwater bungalow in Mo’orea. It was my ultimate bucket list adventure and I’m counting down the days until we can go back.
July: I ate my first beignet! It was a powdery, fluffy, ball of sugar, and it was delicious. Not to mention I LOVE the name of the restaurant: Pig in a Jelly Jar.
August: (Bucket List Item) — When we found out that Cody would be starting his new (dream) job at the end of this month we decided to sneak in a last minute road trip to Arizona. We relaxed at my favorite childhood escape — Lake Powell — and then explored the vastness that is the Grand Canyon. Bucket List adventure: Check. 101 goals adventure: Check. New Job: CHECK! 🙂
September: Wipe Out! — I found myself incredibly sick for three solid weeks in September and with an unwanted trip to the ER, I didn’t accomplish all that much when it came to my adventurous goals (you may have noticed that my blog took a backseat during this time as well). However, Better Health = More Adventures, so I’m completely okay with taking a small break to slow down and take care of myself when it is needed.
October: I went to my very first corn maze! Our sweet friends invited us to the Black Island Farms Corn Maze in Northern Utah and we had so.much.fun! Nothing like good food, pumpkin picking, hay rides, and getting lost in a bunch of corn with your besties (Unsolved Mystery theme song and Michael Myers Halloween music are optional but highly recommended). 😉 I love Halloween!
November: My husband’s birthday month! In the past we’ve traveled from Indianapolis to Georgia all in the name of football, however, because Cody started his new job in August we decided to skip a football game this year. So what was new this month you ask? Three words: A NEW CAR! (Saying that in my best ‘The Price is Right’ voice). It was time for an upgrade, and luckily for me, Santa came a little early.
December: Unfortunately for me, I spent the majority of December sick. It’s safe to say that I have been sick more days than I have been healthy over the course of this Fall, and between us, I’m looking forward to the day where I wake up and feel great. Looking on the bright side, I was able to spend some time with my amazing family and our dear friends throughout the month, and for that, I’m incredibly grateful.
Even though there were a few health hiccups during the year, overall 2016 was INCREDIBLE! I can’t believe that I checked off seven different bucket list items and numerous goals on my 101 list! And as I reflect on the year that was, I’m also looking ahead to 2017 and all of the promise that a new year brings.
