Meet King Harald and Queen Sonja.
The honorable Norwegian couple have reigned since 1991, and their love story is incredibly sweet. Queen Sonja was born to a clothing merchant–definitely not anything near “royal status,” so the couple dated for nine years in secrecy until Harald told his father he would remain unmarried throughout his life unless he could marry Sonja. (Sweet, right?)
Haakon Gullvaag is the artist behind the royal portraits above and there has been a lot of
controversy discussion on whether or not it was disrespectful to depict the King and Queen this way. I personally like the style of the artist. I like how is portraits are unlike anything that I have seen before, however, I can’t help but think of the zombies on the Walking Dead when I look at these portraits (especially King Harald).
What do you think? Do you like the artist’s Unusual Point of View or do you find it disrespectful?
**By the way, if you are ever in Oslo, do yourself a favor and take a few hours to browse Oslo City Hall. The artwork is amazing, the history is intriguing, and the decor within the Hall is exquisite. (Did I mention that admission is FREE.) It was one of my favorite stops on our trip and I can’t wait to share the rest of our visit with you. Blog post coming soon…
